city of torcity of tor

Negotiating with Doc Grun, Vizier, former High Pasha of the Oasis of Nine Wells, in the City of Tor.

Much of the city, of course, was organized to support the caravan trade. There were many walled, guarded warehouses, requiring their staffs of scribes and guards, and, in hundreds of hovels, lived kaiila tenders, drovers, and such, who would, at the caravan tables, when their moneys had been exhausted, apply, if accepted, making their mark on the roster, once more for a post with some new caravan. Guards for these caravans, incidentally, were usually known by, and retained by, caravan merchants between caravans. They were known men. Tenders and drovers, on the whole, came and went. Elaborate random selection devices, utilizing coins and sticks, and formulas, were sometimes used by merchants to assure that applying tenders and drovers were selected, if they were not known, by chance. Tenders and drovers were assured that this was to insure fairness. Actually, of course, as was well known, this was a precaution against the danger of hiring, en bloc, unwittingly, an organized group of men, who might, prior to their hiring, have formed a plan to slay the guards and merchants and make off with the caravan. Tenders and drovers, however, like men generally, were an honest sort.

Tor, rather similarly, (to the oasis) though few crops were grown within its walls, was built high, about its water, several wells in the deepest area in the city. The architecture of Tor, in concentric circles, broken by numerous, narrow, crooked streets, was a function of the radius from its wells. An advantage of this municipal organization, of course, though it is scarcely a matter of intentional design, is that the water is in the most protected portion of the city, its center.

These buildings, on the outside smooth and bleak, save for occasional narrow windows, high, not wide enough to admit a body, abut directly on the streets, making the streets like deep, walled alleys. In the center of the street is a gutter. It seldom rains in Tor, but the gutter serves to collect waste, which is often thrown into it, through open doors, by slaves. Within these walls, however, so pressing upon the street, I knew there were often gardens, walled, well-watered, beautiful, and cool, dark rooms, shielded from the heat and sun, many with superb appointments.

The buildings of Tor are of mud brick, covered with colored, often flaking, plasters. But now, in the sun, and the dust, raised by the people in the streets, everything seemed drained of color.

Tor was, as Gorean cities went, rich, trading city. It was headquarters for thousands of caravan merchants. In it, too, were housed many craftsmen, practicing their industries, carvers, varnishers, table makers, gem cutters, jewelers, carders, dyers of cloth, weavers of rugs, tanners, makers of slippers, toolers of leather, potters, glaziers, makers of cups and kettles, weapon smiths, and many others. Much of the city, of course, was organized to support the caravan trade.

Tor, lying at the northwest corner of the Tahari, is the principal supplying point for the scattered oasis communities of that dry vastness, almost a continent of rock, and heat, and wind and sand.

Oasis of Sand SleenOasis of Sand Sleen

The Kavar Oasis of Sand Sleen and the First Girl Devilssabre.

The Kavar is the other major tribe of the Tahari and is often at odds with the Aretai. Their vassal tribes are the Ta’Kara, Bakahs, Cha,r and Kashani. Their war cry is ‘Kavars Supreme!’. Their mark is a blue scimitar facing outward from the body on the right forearm. Weapons include the Weapons sleeve dagger and scimitar.

The major tribes were ruled by Pashas. The Pasha often resided in a Kasbah, the fortress.

Men also wear the kaffiyeh and the agal. The kaffiyeh is a squarish scarf, folded over into a triangle, and placed over the head. Two points of it are placed at the side of the shoulders. One is placed in the back to protect the back of the neck. It is bound to the head by the agal, several loops of cord. The cording indicates a person’s tribe and district in the Tahari region. Some men, generally in the cities, may wear a head scarf, a wrapped turban of rep cloth. This protects the head from the sun and does not permit sweat to escape. Among lower-caste men, it can also provide a soft cushion for boxes and other burdens. You simply steady the burden with your right hand. In doors, men commonly wear soft, heel-less slippers with extended, curling toes.

Slave girls in the Tahari often wear chalwars. These are baggy pants of diaphanous silk, gathered in closely at the ankles. They are worn low on the hips, several inches below the belly button. They are similar to the harem trousers of the middle east region of Earth. They may also wear a silk vest with the chalwars.

Oasis of Sand sleenkassar

THE RETURN OF THE OASIS!

by AdriaRickman Resident (Adria), High scribe of Ianda on the Isle of landa

Word has returned of massive sandstorms that decimated the cities of Oasis of Sand Sleen and Oasis of Nine Wells! They lay in ruins, it’s said, the wells all dried of water, ruins found on the outskirts of the cities, the caravans turned back to the City of Tor and Oasis of Two Scimitars.

On the return road they heard many rumours, one being a massive Kurii ship had crashed, destroying everything in its wake and one other that the Bazi plague had hit and the citizens of the two Oasis had sealed off the cities to stop it spreading.

But not to be deterred they found cartographers, mapmakers and other merchants and made plans to start again for the Oasis cities, and good news! They did indeed find a new route!

The merchants of the southern trade alliance discovered the new route, they blazed new trails and fought through new lands to find they Oasis again. When they arrived, cautiously looking round, they found no evidence of Kurii, or Bazi plague! The people told of a huge sandstorm, and although some lives were lost and buildings damaged, they still had water and the wells were unaffected.

They are in the process of rebuilding now and so trade remains with an additional route.

WHERE DOES THE GLORIUS EMPIRE OF AR EXIST? ~ 400 Years in the Future
By Teal Razor

In Port Olni, for the most part, the dwellers go about their tasks in a placid but cautious manner. Well, for the most part, except when sex starved slaves obtain a construction crew to erect an impromptu dance pit in the dead center of the commons. This was the scene last week in the commons of Port Olni.

Passersby were taken aback by this construction zone. Curiously though, the passersby did not report this behavior to a warrior, a magistrate, or the Ubarate. I speculated that those who passed by did not inform the authorities because they thought it was another project by the architectural firm, Buildem & Pray. After all it had all the earmarks of one of their construction sites; rubble, cement dust, and puddles of water everywhere.

So, no one suspected that a slave was actually the contractor. The pit, though, was fabricated so shoddily that there was a hole in the sand of the pit near the perimeter. When the slave/construction manager hopped in the pit to show a visiting physician some new moves she had learned, the hole proved to be a hindrance to her footfalls. At a couple of points in the dance she fell face first into the hole. I had never seen such a movement in any Gorean dance I had learned at the Gorean Dance Academy.

That no punishment was accorded the slave for causing this architectural flaw in the commons is the biggest puzzle of all. After the dance, the slave just walked away casually. Later a warrior saw the mess in the commons and ordered it cleared immediately. He asked around to see if he could learn who was responsible for this monstrosity of a dance pit. Funny, no one was able to identify the “perp” since no one thought a slave would do such a thing and chalked it up to the architectural firm of Buildem & Pray. No one would question THEIR doings in the commons. I think if anyone passing would have stopped to ascertain what was going on, the slave would have been apprehended quickly with a public whipping to follow.

This unquestioning of a questionable act was the forerunner of further aberrant behavior of the Citizens of Port Olni. I tried to figure out why last week, all the citizens believed that the Glorious Empire of Ar raided Port Olni.

The citizens even went so far as to claim injury and capture from the raiders who swooped down from the Glorious Empire of Ar. The peculiar thing about this raid was that it did not take place.

But, you could not reassure the citizens of this fact. The citizens brandished their swords and whacked away at invisible raiders before them.

And yet, for a raid that did not take place, the citizens thought it was real. Women hid, babies cried, alarms were sounded and the bridge raised. Warriors were seen tying themselves in binds, shouting to the thin air that they would kill the sleen from the Glorious Empire of Ar.

I came upon the aftermath of this raid to see people actually standing around discussing it. I felt like I was in a time warp because the Glorious Empire of Ar … does not exist. If it exists somewhere in the future we do not know. I mean, when was the last time a haruspex gazed into the entrails of a giani and said… “By golly, the Glorious Empire of Ar exists in the future. In fact, 400 years in the future.” No one has done this to anyone’s knowledge and yet Port Olni was deluded into thinking the Glorious Empire of Ar existed and they were in fact being raided by The Glorious Empire of Ar.

If the Glorious Empire of Ar does not exist and if by chance it will exist in the future, then in order to raid Port Olni, the raiders from that Glorious Empire would have had to use a time machine. Time machines do not exist, therefore the Glorious Empire of Ar was not in Olni.

I pondered this mass hysteria and decided to check the water supply to see if someone had infused a mind altering drug in the cisterns. I drank it, as a test, hoping I could see things that were not there. It did not happen. I was as sober as a magistrate after drinking a bota full of the stuff. I sniffed the air for some malicious gas that could be floating around. Gas has been known to cause ill effects on the sniffee’s. No gas was detected by me. Just the plain ole clean air of Port Olni.

I then had a bright idea that maybe the city had ingested Sa tarna grains contaminated with ergot. I rushed to the bakery and ate some mouthfuls of the grain hoping for a psychedelic effect. The only thing I received was a stomach ache.

This is a puzzle that one cannot solve. It did leave collateral damage in Olni with cuts, bruises, and headaches. They are still talking about it and all I can think of is…why?

ASK TEAL ~ Dubious Advice to Goreans
By Teal Razor

DEAR TEAL:
I am a warrior and in my city I have noticed a steady increase in gambling. I myself like to throw an ostrakan into a basket to judge the way a game will go or not but I am not talking of this casual type of gambling. I have been seeing a more pervasive and insidious game being played where two men are drinking in the tavern. One brings out a pair of dice and tells the other…”I want to cut your head off. I want you to roll the dice and if you roll a number higher than mine, I will not cut your head off. But, if the number you roll is lower than the one I throw, you lose your head. So lets do that to pass the time.” I have seen men agree to this, the dice are thrown and inevitably a head will roll onto the tavern floor accompanied by much blood.

Three of my brother warriors were involved in such nonsense last week. One of them wound up without a right arm, which makes him useless to his caste, another had a dagger stuck in his belly and may not make it, the last was carved up like a vulo on a spit and died. This vice is spreading even to the kennels. Slaves are starting to throw dice to see who will clean up the bosk pens and they even throw the dice to find out how many lashes with a quirt that the first girl will administer.

Free women in the commons have stopped conversing so that they can roll dice on the table. They prearrange with another free woman that if they roll a higher number, that person can kill the slave of the other. If the other woman rolls higher, she gets to impale the other woman’s slave.

How can this madness go on and what can I do to stop it.

DEAR LEAVING LAS VEGAS:
Madness is an apt word for what you are experiencing. What you relate is a chilling tale of life being determined by a role of the dice. I mean what does that say for the participants, that they are at a loss for words to work out their differences, that they are so bored out of their minds that they chose not to speak but grunt to one another? I think you are right to rant about this “unspeakable” behavior. I am wondering what you really can do about this. It is a risky business to get between a person and his vice, especially of the vice of gambling.

If you think about it, you could become the object of their wrath and instead of their betting on one another, they could bet who could be next to run you through with a sword. This would be bad for your health.

I really believe that you should look for another city to make your Home Stone. Find a city where the citizens are articulate and have developed the habit of reading. It is doubtful that you will find “dice rollers” in your new city. The sound of soft chatter will be heard instead of the blood curdling screams of those who lose their limbs to a bet.

[15:21] SARAN [Ries Kurka] speaks loud and clear “it will be impossible to do that Yuroki, quantities involved is very limited, you can hide it in a kaiila’s ass even, how would you control the trade except if it is centrally bought, but we are spread all over the tahari and south of Gor?”

[15:22] Rarius Yuroki [Yuroki Uriza]: “I must admit that, and perhaps a decree about Kanda trade would make us ridiculous.”

[15:24] ƙʋʋɾʋʂ [SireLion Diabolito]: yes regulating but if you stop the kanda’s trade the war you would avoid could come
[15:25] ƙʋʋɾʋʂ [SireLion Diabolito]: you have to find a middle way

[15:32] Rarius Yuroki [Yuroki Uriza]: “very well, i withdraw my proposal about a Kanda decree then, perhaps the Pasha of Nine Wells should recommend another kind of regulation the next time”

[15:32] SARAN [Ries Kurka] nods “I also support that view, no control on the kanda, Tharna can do as they wish in their territory”

The History of the Two Southern Trade Alliances On Gor

CHAPTER IV: LANDA DECLARES WAR AGAINST ALL CITIES OF THE SOUTHERN TRADE ALLIANCE
CHAPTER V: THE GREAT BATTLE OF LANDA
CHAPTER VI: FOUNDATION OF A NEW AND TRUE SOUTHERN TRADE ALLIANCE
CHAPTER VII: THE DECLINE OF THE FALSE SOUTHERN TRADE ALLIANCE

CHAPTER I: THE BEGINNING

There was only one Southern Trade Alliance in the past. This alliance had been created by the Port of Meqara at the Vosk river. Fina and Turia dominated this alliance because Meqara is only a small port. The City of Landa had been invited to join the STA in the year 10161 contasta Ar.

After a while Turia declared war against Landa for no specific reason in the eight month of the same year. [November 2011]

[16:54:25] Rayah Wrexan (rayah.marenwolf): What would be the demands to end this war before it starts?
[16:54:48] Sherman Easterwood [Praetor of Landa]: “I resolved nothing, I spoke to you and you refused to resolve it. Said I should speak directly to the man who threatened.”
[16:55:03] Darius Vayandar [Ubar of Turia]: What will end this war, is Yuroki being arrested and brought to Turian courts to stand trial for his actions.

CHAPTER II: THE WAR TURIA – LANDA

Second Day of the Eighth Passage Hand in the year of the Priest Kings.
We, the City of Turia, hereby issue a Declaration of WAR against the Port City of Landa. This is in direct reference in regards to attacks on one of Turia’s allies, the City of Rarn, thus directly disrupting the trade route between that of Turia and its ally.
This is a full Declaration of War from the City of Turia to the City of Landa.
Regards,
Administrator of the City of Turia,
Signature: Darius Vayandar

Letter of Rarius Yuroki, Ubar of Landa, to the council members of Landa:
Turia was always hostile to me and Landa without a reason. They attacked us without a reason. We did not react to avoid a war. But now it is enough. We will make Turia a suburb of Landa and call it Troy.
Rarius Yuroki
Ubar of Landa

Landa in war – The Ubar’s speech to the troops

Turia attacked the strong walls of Landa several times but they failed. Landa hired mercs from the Voltai mountains and got some warriors and even the Ubar of Turia in chains.

[12:29 PM] Aron Zahm running his free hand over the man’s back of the head and he grasps the man’s hair with a sudden move. He then draws his hand back along with the man’s head without a delay between moves. His hand, which was holding dagger takes it’s position in front of the man’s throat and he slit’s the man’s throat with a sudden pressure and drawing move with sharp dagger
[12:29 PM] GM 4.1 shouts: Bounty Silversmith [of Turia] has been killed by aron zahm

Turia did not expect to lose the War but they did. Then Port Meqara which was allie of Landa betrayed us and started to fight against us as well.

Lady Dez, the head scribe of Landa, wrote a letter about this betrayal and the Southern Trade Alliance:

CHAPTER III: THE SOUTHERN TRADE ALLIANCE – WHAT YOU SHOULD BUT YOU DONT’ KNOW

There comes a time when one feels one must speak up, and this time has come for me.

Let me tell you what has made me so upset. So upset that I took the time to pull a scroll and started to write my reasons why I feel this way.

The STA. Yes I am angry about the STA.. The STA was an idea by an egotistical and egocentric maniac who has turned out to be a dictator and terrorist all in one.

It was believed that the STA. Which called itself the Southern Trade Alliance, would be here to protect the trade ways between the cities, since the north was threatening the south.. It was not in any way to tell us how to live who to be allied with and what our rules or laws can be. How that group has turned into such a dictorship, I don’t know. Where they get off shouting orders to other cities who they can be allied with and who not, I don’t know.. And I have had enough of it.

The trouble started when we asked the STA to help us with obtaining copper from a Rarn and nothing was done.. Rarn would not respond to our wishes to trade.. it seems they were deaf to any requests to Landa. So Landa reacted and instead of the STA helping , considering it is a trade alliance, it expelled Landa from that group by night, with only 3 or 4 cities awake. They pushed it through before anyone else could intervene. Anyone else who would dare stand in the way of them would be crushed or kicked out as well.

Landa was humiliated, accused, urinated on and so forth.. but that’s not all.. so let me tell you what happened, if you have not heard it already.

The City of Atria came to Landa and we welcomed them with open arms. We formed an alliance and all was well. Until one day the STA decided that this was not going to happen and they laid fires in Atria with a warning that if they do not dissolve the Alliance, that they would be burned to the ground.

Unfortunately the leaders of Atria caved and the Alliance was severed.. That’s too bad because, even though I am a FW, that really upset me and I would have not stood for the terrorist demands. On the contrary, I would have amassed as many of my friends and protected the city ..stood up for what is right and demand an apology for daring to tell us who we can or can not be allied with. Well, too bad. It was heartbreaking to see our friends turn on us.

I have also heard that we have been accused or not fighting fairly or not being honorable and all sorts of things.. So let me tell you this:

Landa Is a proud and strong City.. We are honorable and loyal people and we will defend ourselves as we see fit and no one.. and I mean absolutely no one can tell us otherwise. We will never be ordered around by the egomaniac or by the wimps of the STA. WE will, if we have to, stand on our own and do as we have have always done. Live honorable and do what is right, protect our people and our friends. We will not pay homage to the STA !

So, having written what I have carried around in my heart for so long, I now feel better.. thank you for reading my article and have a pleasant day..*smiles
~Lady Dez

Landa could not be defeated. Fina was member of the Southern Trade alliance and voted Landa out, and Tafa and Meqara did this as well.

Landa made several proposals to try and end the war, but they declined everything.

[14:56] Yuroki Uriza shouts: Landa was here Fina! This is the last warning! LEAVE THE SOUTHERN TRADE ALLIANCE!

Landa attacked Fina several times between the 12th month of the year 10161 and the month of En’kara of the year 10162 and defeated them, but did not take captives.

CHAPTER IV: LANDA DECLARES WAR AGAINST ALL CITIES OF THE SOUTHERN TRADE ALLIANCE

Then the high council of Landa made a decision:

Declaration of War against Fina, Sulport, Midas, Port of Meqara, Turia and Thentis

The High Council of Landa declares that a state of war exists between the Cites Of The STA and the Government and the people of Landa Continent are making provisions to prosecute the same. Whereas the Cities Of The STA has committed unprovoked acts of war against the Government and the people of Landa Continent. Therefore be it Resolved by the High Council of Landa assembled. That the state of war between Landa Continent and the Cities Of The STA which has thus been thrust upon Landa Continent is hereby formally declared. The newly appointed Ubar is hereby authorized to employ the entire naval and military forces of Landa Continent and the resources of Landa Continent to carry on war against the Cities Of The STA. To bring the conflict to a successful termination. All of the resources of Landa Continent are hereby pledged by the High Council.

Sherman Easterwood, Praedor of Landa

CHAPTER V: THE GREAT BATTLE OF LANDA

written by lady Dez
Second day of the first hand of the month of Hesius

As I was sorting through the scrolls which threatened to crash my desk, I heard the alarm ring. I stopped and walked to the balcony to see what was happening.. Dark clouds hovered over the dock and upon closer inspections I saw as warriors arrived from not only one but several cities.. I remember seeing Meqara, Thentis, Fina, and Sulport. I squinted my eyes and I believe I saw midas as well, but I could be mistaken.

It did not look at all like a friendly visit, and I feared our Warriors would be badly outnumbered.

I saw grapples being thrown over the walls and the enemies tried to breech the wall. For an ahn Landa’s Warriors were able to keep the enemy out of the city, but eventually the wall was breeched and they got inside. Some of Landa’s fierce fighters left the wall and engaged in hand to hand combat.

I watched in horror as the fighting continued. I knew our men are strong and fierce fighters, but I worried that they might not be able to withstand so many and hold them at bay.

The battled continued for two ahns, but contrary to my fears, Landa stood strong. Many attackers lay bound in the streets of Landa. I stood and watched as it drew to an end. In a show of good faith Landa released it’s prisoners and allowed them to return to their city.

Everyone was proud of the way the men defended Landa. After the fighting was over the Free Women ran into the street yelling with joy, as they celebrated the men’s successful defense of Landa.

SECOND DAY OF THE FIRST HAND OF THE MONTH OF HESIUS 10161

CHAPTER VI: FOUNDATION OF A NEW AND TRUE SOUTHERN TRADE ALLIANCE

On the month of Camerius of the year 10162 contasta Ar [June 2012] a fairly large number of cities, oasis and villages came together in Landa and established a new trade alliance of Southern Gor.

Citizens of A NEW AND TRUE SOUTHERN TRADE ALLIANCE Join together to form a Magna Carta:

The Citizens of the TRUE SOUTHERN TRADE ALLIANCE, in league. to form a more perfect coalition and to establish Justice, to ensure domestic tranquility, to provide for trade with safe passage, to promote the general well-being and to secure the Blessings of the Priest Kings to ourselves and our posterity and to prescribe and validate this:
We proclaim to work together towards trade support. To unify the south against invaders seen from any entity especially from the North and the Vosk region (as the false Southern Trade Alliance from Meqara is just a front organization of the Vosk League) that disrupts our mutual trade investments within our Ports, Cities and Oasis, for peace and prosperity and the protection of our trade routes.
We the under signed with the seal of our city hereby proclaim:
(In this document the term city refers to City, Oasis, Town, Village or Encampment)
1. The cities will work together towards beneficial trade between member states.
2. An option for military support against cities not within the Southern Trade Alliance of Gor ( Each attack will be decided by member states ).
3. No member city will belong to the Vosk League or Southern Trade Alliance .
4. The Alliance will endeavor to keep the peace and allow trade to flourish.
5. All member states will act at all times within the codes of the castes of each city.
6. Any dispute between cities will be settled in the court of the city which the dispute arose .
7. Any dispute involving a group of cities will be settled in a neutral city with three Legal Scribes making the final decision if the cities cannot agree.
8. Each state will be responsible for their own coin and accept the coin of other cities. Each state will set their own exchange rate.

CHAPTER VII: THE DECLINE OF THE FALSE SOUTHERN TRADE ALLIANCE

The false Southern Trade Alliance of Port Meqara and Fina was only a front company to intrude the south of Gor and to support Turia which was a marionette of Fina all the time.

The founder of the Vosk League STA is dead [left Gor]. A scout reported that even Fina left the Southern Trade Alliance. There is nothing left except a lonely sign at the walls of Port Meqara, Tafa and Sulport and Port Cos.
