Tropical Storm hits Landa
Friday, April 8th, 2011A Tropical Storm, the first of the season, slammed into Landa’s coast on the second day of the first week of the first month, its torrential rains triggering landslides and floods that left at least two fishermen almost dead.
Officials worried that heavy rains from the storm, which formed in the East Thassa the day before probably, could exacerbate the damage by turning black volcanic ash into cement-like mud.
It was expected to dump from 10 to 20 inches of rain and as much as 30 inches in isolated areas of the Island of Landa.
The storm is expected to lose force as it comes ashore overnight.
“The storm will start to weaken and we hope that tomorrow it will be just a tropical depression,” said Rarius Yuroki, Admin of Landa. “That is not to say that there won’t be heavy rains.” He added: “The wind speed may rise that high within the next two days”.
Yesterday when the storm arrived, a fishing boat sank and the crew was rescued from the sea by other fishermen late afternoon. (They made this paiting for the Landa Times.)
In another incident, a cargo ship drifted onto a reef nearby Landa.
